  • Basic qualification as medical specialist for dermatology and additional specialization on dermatosurgergy

Classification scheme for Mohs surgeons in Europe

Due to the varying legal situation about the legitimacy of issuing a histopathology report by Mohs surgeons in Europe, the widely missing qualifications of Mohs specific processing of the histological specimen and Mohs specific embedding for the horizontal frozen sectioning, as well as the widely missing qualification in Mohs specific histological analysis by Mohs surgeons, it is necessary to establish a classification scheme which distinguishes these differences. Mohs society Europe develops such a classification scheme at the moment and plans to synchronize this with the two American Mohs societies.

Currently Mohs Society Europe has defined the following classification scheme, which has temporary status but contributes to the understanding of the professional qualifications and legal legitimation for issuing a histopathology report:

  • 1st Grade Mohs Surgeon - Mohs Master
    • Full comprehensive and profound professional Mohs qualification of the dermatosurgeon n performing the proper Mohs surgery technique, proper processing of the Mohs histological specimen and autonomous analysis of the Mohs histology by the Mohs surgeon
    • Full legal legitimation of issuing a histopathology report by the Mohs surgeon without the legal necessity of a second opinion e.g. a pathologist or dermatohistopathologist

  • 2nd Grade Mohs Surgeon - Mohs qualified
    • Like the 1st Grade Mohs surgeon, the dermatosurgeon possesses fully comprehensive and profound professional Mohs qualification in performing the proper Mohs surgery technique, proper processing of the Mohs histological specimen and autonomous analysis of the Mohs histology
    • No legal legitimation of issuing a histopathology report by the Mohs surgeon, therefore a second opinion is legally obligatory, e.g. from a pathologist or dermatohistopathologist

  • 3rd Grade Mohs Surgeon - Mohs limited qualified
    • The dermatosurgeon has limited specific Mohs qualifications and therefore can only partially implement the Mohs process and technique regarding to the surgery, the processing of the histological specimen or the histological analysis
    • Due to the fact that fully comprehensive and profound professional Mohs qualification is missing, the presence of a legal legitimation is therefore not relevant
